Kittyhawk Men’s and Women’s Under 20 Singles.
The Kittyhawk U20 Singles is an event sponsored and supported by a partnership of Bowls NZ, Auckland Bowls and the Kittyhawk Bowling Club of Auckland. It is a most prestigious event and the list of previous winners includes any number of NZ’s high achieving Youth bowlers, many of whom have gone on to achieve both National and International success. This year, Taranaki has been fortunate in being given the opportunity to host the Region 4 [ Taranaki, Wanganui, Kapiti & Wellington] qualifying tournament from which the successful entrants will go on to represent the region in the NZ Finals, next Easter, in Auckland. Prior to that the Centre will be conducting our own Kittyhawk U20 Singles Tournament to find our qualifiers for the Regional event. Clubs are encouraged to support their U20 members [Men & Women] and ensure that if interested they are entered into the Taranaki event in the first instance. That could then lead on to representing our Centre in the Regional finals and then our Region in the National event next Easter. Denise Cooper - Secretary of our Youth Bowls Council - or Brian Harvey the Centre’s Executive Officer will be able to assist Clubs and U20 members with any further help they may need - especially with entry forms and event details and conditions. The key calendar dates for this event are as follows: [i] Taranaki Kittyhawk U20 Men’s & Women’s Singles Saturday 5 December, 2009 [ii] Region 4 Kittyhawk U20 Men’s & Women’s Singles - in Taranaki Saturday 16 January, 2010 [iii] National Kittyhawk U20 Men’s & Women’s Singles FINALS - in Auckland Friday - thru’ - Monday 2 - 5 April, 2010 [Easter]
There are, of course, age and membership restrictions for competitors in this event, which are strictly adhered to..... viz: to be eligible a player must be a fully subscribed or student member of an affiliated Bowling Club and therefore a member of the Taranaki Centre and be aged 19 years or under on Good Friday of the current year. Bowls NZ Regulation 11.6 provides full details of the event.

[10/8/09] Success for Student Bowlers
| New Plymouth Girls High School and Bowls Fitzroy members Sophia Ockhuysen [L] and Letitia Patten [R] after receiving their certificates and trophies for the Region 4 Girls finals played late last season. Congratulations Sophia and Letitia. The girls will represent Region 4 [Wellington, Kapiti, Wanganui & Taranaki] at the NZ Secondary School Finals to be held in Auckland in December this year. All the best for a successful event. The gradual growth we have seen in the Taranaki Centre area of secondary school members becoming fully involved in the range of competitions provided for them has been very encouraging and promising. If you feel that your Club has young bowlers who could do with a little encouragement to become more fully involved in our game then your first call should be to the Centre’s Youth Bowls Council. They will be happy to assist. Give Secretary Denise Cooper [755 4275] a call to arrange some assistance. |

[17/6/09] Bowls Taranaki Youth Bowls Council
A successful AGM of the Taranaki Youth Bowls Council was held on Tuesday night, last - a pleasing outcome after the first attempt to conduct the meeting last month. Many thanks to all Clubs and delegates who attended. The results of the various elections have been recorded above.
[27/5/09] Bowls Taranaki Youth Bowls Council - New Date & Notice of A.G.M.
Unfortunately the AGM for the Taranaki Youth Bowls Council was unable to proceed last night due to five apologies received and only six people in attendance.
A new date has therefore been set for:
Date: Tuesday, 16 June 2009
Place: Centre Office - upstairs @ Paritutu Bowling Club Time: 5.15 pm
The key objective of the Council Members is to administer and promote Youth Bowls on behalf of Bowls Taranaki and if we do not get enough people willing to be members the Taranaki Youth Bowls Council will have to go into recession which would be sad considering the time and effort that has been put in to date.
The Council would ask that your club please send a representative to the AGM on the 16th June. We are looking mainly for people prepared to help with Youth Bowls Tournaments and attend a meeting once a month for about an hour between the months of September and May.
For your information the Council structure consists of approximately 12: viz: Chairman • Secretary • Treasurer • Convenor to Bowls Taranaki Operations Committee • Club representatives x 5 maximum Coaches Assn. representative • Umpires Assn representative • Parents’ representative
Yours faithfully
Denise Cooper Secretary/Treasurer For Taranaki Youth Bowls Council
[20/4/09] Bowls Taranaki Youth Bowls Council - Notice of A.G.M.

Read and Wellington Take Taranaki Titles
Opunake High School’s Daryl Read and Kasey Wellington, of Inglewood High School, confirmed their promise in the sport when they won the boys and girls’ singles titles at the Taranaki Secondary Schools Tournament in the weekend.
Read won his title with two wins and an impressive +40 differential, ahead of runner-up, Corey Hodge of Spotswood College.
Wellington recorded three wins, +36, to edge out Tegan Rahui of Hawera High School and Spotwood’s Emily Keenan, who both had two good wins during the championship.
The boys pairs went to Jamie Fevre and Simon Mullin of Opunake High School with 2 wins, +5, ahead of Sean Wilkie and Hayden Ranford of Hawera High School.
Four wins by Sophia Ockhuysen and Letitia Patten of New Plymouth Girls High School with a differential of +81 allowed them to win the girls pairs in a keenly contested section. The runners-up were Lana Bennett and Ashlee Jackson of New Plymouth Girls High School with 3 ½ wins, +22, while third placed Angela Cobbold and Sophia Chapman of New Plymouth Girls High School also played well to gain 3 wins and a differential of +18.
The TSB Bowls NZ Museum Cup for Youth Bowls Sportsmanship was awarded to Megan Hills of Sacred Heart College who, although not winning a game, kept on smiling and competed well through the day.
The Zone playoff will be held at the Fitzroy Bowling Club on Wednesday 22 April and the following names have gone forward to play: Daryl Read, Corey Hodge, Kasey Wellington, Emily Keenan; Jamie Fevre and Simon Mullin, Sophia Ockhuysen and Letitia Patten, and Lana Bennett and Ashlee Jackson.
Unfortunately Tegan Rahui and the combination of Sean Wilkie and Hayden Ranford are unavailable for the 22nd April
[11/12/08] NZ Secondary Schools Finals
This event is being played in Hamilton today and tomorrow. Members will be keen to follow the progress of fellow members Sophia Ockhuysen and Letitia Patten - representing Taranaki in the girls Pairs. I will publish results as soon as they come to hand. Best of luck, girls! Also taking part - in the Boys Pairs - are Willie Rowlands and Michael O'Donnell of Francis Douglas College.
[17/12/08] NZ Secondary Schools Finals
Very good results for Sophia and Letitia in the National Secondary Schools Champs. The girls qualified for the Championship[A] Section event with 3 wins out of 5 in the qualifying rounds and although up against some more experienced pairs hung on to win the play-off for 5th and 6th in the event. A commendable effort! Very well done!
Willie & Michael also played well in their event and on the final day - although losing the match for 7th & 8th position - finished a very creditable overall performance with a hard fought 8pts to 7pts game.
