16 January, 2010          Pearl Dymond - Taranaki's best performed Women's bowler - passes away, aged 84

Women's Bowls Legend Dies
Taranaki's greatest-ever women's bowler, Pearl Dymond, died this week after a short illness. She was 84.

[Article by kind permission of Grant Hassall.]

Soon after taking up bowls with the Stratford women's club in 1962, Dymond won two Taranaki champion of champions junior singles titles. They were the first of 16 Taranaki titles which she won.
She claimed nine titles in the senior champion of champions singles, her last in 1989, and also won the champion of champions fours, open pairs, open triples (twice) and open fours.
Dymond claimed the New Zealand champion of champions singles title in 1969 and her greatest win occurred in 1979 when she won the New Zealand singles.

Dymond was also a member of the seven-woman Taranaki representative side which won the national intercentre title in 1986, one of only two occasions that Taranaki has won the event.

International bowls is somewhat a relatively recent phenomenon. The first New Zealand women's side selected was in 1969, and the third was picked in 1977 for the third world bowls in Worthing, England.
Dymond made that side, playing third for Cis Winstanley in the fours, and second in the triples, where the Kiwis claimed a silver medal, on greens running at an unaccustomed 9-10 seconds.
"What a highlight it was standing on the dias in front of everyone," Dymond said in latter years.

Women were introduced to the Commonwealth Games only in 1982. And despite the side comprising only a triple, Dymond made the cut, along with her sister, Joyce Osborne.
This provided another highlight for Dymond, who was the oldest of all New Zealand athletes at the games. She celebrated her 57th birthday there, met the Queen and the triple won a silver medal, which was very moving.

Dymond also represented New Zealand at the 1988 bi-centenary event in Australia and then rounded off her international career by representing New Zealand at the sixth world bowls, also in 1988, in Auckland.

Dymond was of true New Zealand bowling stock.
A brother, Vic Sellars, and her sister Joyce both also won the New Zealand singles and represented the country in bowls.

Dymond was predeceased by her husband Peter, and is survived by three sons and three daughters.

Regional Intercentre Finals in Wanganui - Sat 21 February

What might have been! A few wins in the tie-breakers instead of losses - would have changed the final picture somewhat. It didn't happen though!  Indicates the importance of the 3-end tie-breakers in this format. Our teams competed well despite the disappointing results in the end.  A summary of the final results appears on the Rep. team pages.

BOWLS NZ - Taranaki Roadshow Meeting

Wed 25 February, 2009 - 7:00pm - Stratford -Avon Bowling Club.

All bowlers are encouraged to come along and join in to help ensure that we are kept up to date with the range of development issues being promoted by Bowls NZ and the BNZ Board. The extract below - from the Latest Bowls Talk newsletter will help update you on the agenda.

Check the time and date - again. Hope to see you there!

The One Bowls - One Vision project is signaling positive  changes for the sport of bowls with a focus back on fewer, stronger more sustainable clubs. The Task Force met in November and recommended a number of significant changes which were subsequently endorsed by the Board of Bowls NZ.
These changes, if implemented, will affect you and your club and/or centre. Very important meetings will be held in every centre involving all clubs during February/March 2009 and we need you to “get with the game” and participate in one of these meetings so that you can contribute your ideas and raise any issues or concerns as we move forward. Proposals from recent meetings of the Task Force and Game Development Committee include the following:

• Formation of 6 – 12 District Centres to play a leadership role within a district or group of districts and provide a pathway to interclub and inter-centre events
• All other centres to continue to provide an important match committee role
• Formation of 12 playing districts (competitions might continue to be played within current centre boundaries with a district final)
• Regional offices will remain a long term vision but are deferred in the short term due to changes in the economic environment
• A nationally branded pennant style inter-club competition to be played on Saturdays within every centre in New Zealand
• A nationally branded secondary schools competition to be played within every centre in New Zealand
• A Club Master Plan to be based on agreed criteria for metropolitan, provincial and rural clubs. Project Manager, Fay Freeman emphasized the importance of clubs and centres getting on board with the One Bowls – One Vision Project. She said that despite all the publicity and the national road shows held over the last two years there are still clubs and centres who claimed not to know about the changes proposed which she emphasized were important responses to the challenges and opportunities that the sport is facing.

Bowls NZ CEO, Kerry Clark emphasized the commitment to consult widely before making any final decisions on the proposals but also noted the Board’s commitment to make bold decisions that will take the sport forward.
